Michael Jackson (1958-2009) was one of the most successful and influential recording artists of all time.  His 1979 album Off the Wall set the standard for modern pop, and yielded numerous hits, including "Rock With You", "Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough" and "She’s Out of My Life."  Off the Wall , however, was only a starting point for Michael’s success.

His recording of Thriller in 1982 remains the biggest-selling non-compilation album ever released, with sales of more than 40 million copies.  With hits such as "Billie Jean", "Beat it", "Wanna Be Startin’ Something", and "Thriller" (with Vincent Price), the album remains a pop culture icon.  No fewer than 7 of Thriller’s 9 songs made the Billboard Top 10.

In 1982, while performing "Billie Jean" on television, Michael demonstrated The Moonwalk, a dance move that was to remain associated with him for the remainder of his life.

Along with his success as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 (also known as the Jackson 5ive), Michael Jackson was perhaps the top pop singer of both the 1970’s and the 1980’s.  His marriage to Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, forever bonds the two singers most often referred to as "The King."

Sadly, like Elvis, Michael Jackson passed away at an all-too-early age.  He will be missed by all that admired him.

Of course, there are some that say that while Michael Jackson was a great artist, he was hardly the "King."  That title, they say, belongs to Elvis Presley.

So what do you think?  Was Michael the King?  Was it Elvis?
